this painting was started in 2012 and never completed. i returned to it in september of 2015 after a ritual invoking the spirit of la loba (the wild wolf woman) in which we ran through the woods with la loba and a wild wolf to our place in the forest. reaching "my place" was one of the clearest visions i had during this trance, and the previous permutation of this piece resembled that vision in a lot of ways. so, using my lessons from la loba, i took an old, seemingly dead, skeleton - saved what was of use to me, and blacking out the rest - and brought it back to life.

(a rebirth of the piece "land in sea, simultaneously," 2012)
alchemy is an ambidextrous effort
i need both of my hands
to pick up my scattered bones
to put myself together
to build my branches thicker
to hold all of the birds
why am i still holding out a whole hand
when you haven't sung a word?
i could be holding my own hand
holding the hands of other girls
but there's something about your wings, my dear
that keeps one branch reserved
i'm taking back my whole hand
but i can still hold you up
i need both of my hands, sweet one
to leaf gold
to catch the sun

during a semester in aix-en-provence, france - the area cezanne lived and worked - my mentors gave me immense exposure to the world of french impressionism. i immersed myself in the culture and experience of the rich, historical town i was fortunate enough to live in.
